Oct 2016 - Star SU Uses Virtual Inspection and Cut Simulation

Recent changes in automotive technology include a move away from hydraulic to electric steering systems. For Star SU, that means much tighter tolerances in the manufacture of rack milling cutters at their Tawas, Michigan plant. Today’s steering systems contain highly engineered rack and pinion components.

The complexity and precision of these components require cutting tool measurement techniques not found on standard inspection equipment. Recently, Andy Kobs, Star SU cutting tool designer, met Werner Lueken, Zoller inspection product manager, at a meeting of AGMA. They discussed the need for a special application to measure and inspect the rack milling cutters Star SU manufactures. Lueken offered a new solution in the form of measuring and inspecting the milling cutters visually, and to the micron, using the Zoller hobCheck system.

Feb 2016 - In-Process Inspection Saves Powertrain Time

Northern Tool, a division of Star Cutter Co. (Farmington Hills, MI), is well-known for designing and producingspecial carbide cutting tools—often for automotive powertrain production—that accomplish more than one cutting operation in a single pass. With its CNC tool grinders, OD grinders, roughing OD grinders, and edge prep machines, plus blank prep machines and a cutoff and laser-etching machine, the company produces carbide drills, reamers, end mills, and form tools.


An investment in in-process tool measurement devices from Zoller Inc. (Ann Arbor, MI) has enabled Northern Tool to achieve up to 90% savings in the time it takes to inspect the complex tools it makes compared to the previous optical comparator inspection. With Zoller in-process inspection, the toolmaker can assure a correct grinding process before production fully ramps up and guarantee the tools are ground as-designed or can even detect if a tool may not operate as intended.

H. Beck Machinery Ltd. (Windsor, ON, Canada) specializes in high-accuracy, large-scale CNC custom machining using 10 large machines from boring mills to a six-axis Droop + Rein mill and a five-axis Fidia machining center. ZOLLER tool management systems have saved H. Beck Machinery machine time and permitted longer untended machine operation in its machining of auto stamping dies from roughing to finishing.

Feb 2015 - Bosch Rexroth: How Bosch Rexroth in Fountain Inn Pumps Up Manufacturing Cost Control

At its Fountain Inn, SC, plant, Bosch Rexroth produces many different axial piston hydraulic pumps and valve housings for its drive products for heavy equipment and agricultural applications. Controlling the cost of more than 900 different tool assemblies it uses is a major task. A ZOLLER Tool Management System is how it’s done.
Bosch Rexroth in Fountain Inn has two production buildings with more than 90 CNC machine tools, mostly DMG and Mori Seiki machining centers operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Material of iron and steel are received from foundry suppliers and machined on the 4- and 5-axis machining centers which feature large tool storage capacities.

July 2012 - Cummins Inc.: How Cummins is improving production efficiency

Cummins engineers saw that valuable production time could be saved by investing in ZOLLER tool presetting and heat shrinking technology. Avoiding tool setting on-machine saves about 5 minutes per tool, engineers estimated. Typically 6 tools a day are changed on each machine, which means comes to a half-hour production saved per machine per day. Cummins estimates it is achieving about 20% greater efficiency in production, thanks to the ZOLLER off-line presetting. The plant now changes its heat-shrink cutting tools and accurately sets key dimensions to within microns without interfering with production.
